For p5 our task is to identify the at least three current trends and three factors which are having a significant effect on the industry. In my task I shall be explaining the trends and how they have had an impact on the Travel and Tourism sector.
Costaconcordia Cruise Liner 15/01/12
Trend
Firstly I am starting off with the Costaconcordia Cruise Liner, and how it made an impact on the Travel and Tourism sector. The Costaconcordia was an Italian Cruise Liner ship, well known for her reputation, best customer service and also the lovely sightseeing across the Mediterranean. The Costaconcordia was on a 7 day trip around the Mediterranean with over 4,2000 people on board. Disaster stroke plates where smashing and lights where turning off, and on making customers very scared and worried. Members of the cabin where telling the customers to remain calm and that there was nothing to worry about until a few hours later, everyone was being evacuated off the cruise ship urgently due to a water leak in the lower deck, this eventually flooded the 3 decks and she sank.

This disaster that happened had an incredible impact on the Travel and Tourism sector because this issue was spread across the world letting everyone know about what happened. Because of what happened to this cruise liner and the people less people are booking with this cruise liner and are worried about taking cruises because of the disaster. A statistic tells me online that a group of people did a survey and 4% of people responded that cruising is too risky and they won't take to the seas again. This means that a percentage will not be traveling and the effect on the cruiser liners are that they are not making money. Everyone pictures this awful event as a second remake of the Titanic therefore it has caused panic and distress to future customers wanting to travel by sea. More customers are choosing to fly instead of taking cruises because they do not want anything to happen and they want to stay safe. A source tells me that the industry cast itself in a positive light by acting swiftly, decisively and with one voice. No fewer than 10 new safety procedures were put in place so that there is a less likely chance of this occurring again because the safety procedures have been put in place. The impact the Costa has had- Be that as it may, the industry cast itself in a positive light by acting swiftly, decisively and with one voice. No fewer than 10 new safety procedures were put in place within a year of the accident, and three of them were enshrined in maritime law by the end of 2012' . According to the Daily Mail 'it has had a negative effect on hotel reservations and holiday lettings, therefore this occurrence is effecting buisness from earning money. According to WSJ's Gilles Castonguayme that The cruise liner Costa Concordia, which ran aground off the coast of Italy in January, has become an unlikely tourist attraction as salvage crews work to dismantle it just meters from a popular beach. This has had an effect on the near by beach because the beach once popular is now not making money. The impact it has had is that cruise liners are not making as much profit like they did before the incident and this is putting strain company I know this because a source tells me that ‘Carnival Corp’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Micky Arison, acknowledged the impact of the disaster: "As a result of the Costa Concordia tragedy in January, the past year has been the most challenging in our company's history. The price in tickets have decreased therefore the company are not making profit due to the occurrence of the sink. In conclusion of this section that this should not likely hold a long term impact as hopefully it is a one off occurrence. This dreadful occurrence was a one off so hopefully the company should be back on form and earning the profit they'd expect to be earning if the Costaconcodria was still around. According to the PSA they forecast that cruise passenger numbers are rising towards 1.7 million this year and will make it to two million by 2014. A source from pintrest also tells me that cruises around the Mediterranean are still most popular with the brits. These statistics show that just because the cruise liner Costaconcorida has a one of occurrence in 2012 people are still continuing to go on cruises, in fact the statistics have risen, cruise passenger number are heading towards 1.7 million this year. New ships are continually being built some with a total passenger capacity of 14,074. FRom 2014 to 2015 13 more cruise ships will come online adding 39,297, from this statistic it shows me that just because a one off occurrence happened company's are still continue to build more ships as the travel sector is increasing.
A total of 6 new ships were added in 2013 with a total passenger capacity of 14,074. From 2014 to 2015, a net of 13 more new cruise ships will come online adding 39,297 lower births, or 8.7% to passenger capacity. The ships from 2014 to 2015 will add $3.2 billion in annual revenue to the cruise industry.
Madeline McCann 03/05/07
Factor is that there is saftey concerns in Portugal so families are put off to visit here
Trend- Decrease in tourism in Portugal because of what happened to Madline in the friendly resort
The Madeline McCann story has been going on for a few years now because of her mum and dad setting up campaigns to search for her. The reason why I have chosen this now because recently in the news there has been evidence of the young girl at the Praia De Luz resort Portugal where she and her family stayed in May 2007. When the news broke out that a young girl got kidnapped in Portugal whilst mother and father where out, the media suddenly noticed and took a shine to this disaster. When Madeline went missing there was a decrease in tourist a source tells me that 'Shortly after Madeleine's abduction reports emerged that the former fishing village of Praia de Luz, which once thrived on tourism, was a ghost town, that cancellations had flooded in and the beach was empty. This has an effect on the tourism industry because the resort is not making money, and families are too scared to visit Portugal a head line tells me that 'Holiday prices fall fall in Space and Portugal'. Families are not feeling safe to take their children there because they are frightened of what may happen and the fact that the resort is not safe at all. A second source tells me that the global economy has had more of an impact this year than any fears following the McCann case I have no doubt that the value of the pound must be a big factor she said adding in particular, we found that clients from the UK were systematically asking for discounts this year." The impact it has on the Travel and Tourism industry is that families do not want to go to Portugal because they see it as an unsafe place to take their children on holiday, therefore money is not being made as people are not choosing this resort as a holiday. Also tourist do not want to pay full price for the holiday resort, so they are asking for discount, this means that the resort is not making money and the profit off the resort is decreasing.
The Euro
Factor Weak pound against the Euro
The factor is that less UK resident are taking over sea's long haul breaks and choosing European distention instead. further more there has been growth within stakation popularity.
I have chosen the Euro as a factor because the pound is weaker than the euro. In 2009 the weak pound against the euro showed that people on holiday in Europe therefore this encouraged UK tourist to go on holiday at domestic or in other parts of the world, where the currency was stronger getting better value for money. I know this because a statistic tells me In July 2012, when sterling was its strongest point against the euro in the last 18 months, £1 would equate to almost €1.29. Today, it has dipped under €1.17.Weak pound means that we get less value for money in euro countries but on the other hand the UK is great for those in euro countries as when they come here they get better value for money. Alol webpage tells me that 'Despite the pound falling in value against the euro this year, holidaymakers planning trips to a European hot spot may find their holiday cash stretches further than expected because prices have plummeted in many popular resorts'. Compared to a few years ago, visits to the UK by overseas residents increased by 2.2% to 6.4 million inquarter 1 2013. The length of visit by overseas residents also increased, with number of nights spent in the UK rising by 7.7%. In addition, the estimated earnings from these visits increased by 11.5% to £3.6 billion. Visits abroad by UK residents in this quarter remained unchanged at 10.3 million. While the number of nights spent abroad, by UK residents, was down by 1.1% compared with quarter 1 in 2012, expenditure during these visits increased by 3.2% to £6.1 billion. Less UK residents are taking over sea's long haul breaks and are choosing a European destination.
